Nicaraguan guerrinna sister breast feeding her baby during the Contra War. Orlando Valenzuela’s photography captures the femininity of revolutionary Sandinista women so beautifully.

“I have learned that a woman can be a fighter, a freedom fighter, a political activist, and that she can fall in love and be loved. She can be married, have children, be a mother. Revolution must mean life also; every aspect of life.” Leila Khaled

i mean—i love this picture. i really do. it calls to mind the other picture of a woman breast feeding her baby talking to hugo chavez. but…i’ve seen it reblogged so so so many times these past few days—and some poeple have a legitimate right to, as they are latina and this is their history or they’re women of color and i trust that they reblog this critically or aware of context— and other people …i don’t know. this picture coupled with the other pictures of women (mostly women from the global south or carribean islands that i’ve seen) in soldadera gear with guns and in formations…

i’ve been thinking a lot about this poem and wondering in what world we think that being a mami during war time is beautiful or inspiring. :

The African way of doing things were classified as backward, unscientific and barbaric. To the point of death from malaria, the westerners that first set foot on Africa refused to drink the herbal remedies offered by the kind natives to alleviate their suffering. Indigenous knowledge was regarded as baseless and summarily dismissed as superstition.

Intuition, metaphysics, sixth sense and other sources of knowledge long depended on, tried and tested by Africans were de-emphasized and western “scientific” method was upheld as the ultimate. The outdoor learning culture of Africans was scoffed at and African children were made to seat in classrooms just like in Europe, to learn the history of the Europeans, the Geography of Europe and the language of the colonialists.

Education became an enigma for the young and impressionable African child, who looked on with confused eyes as his blue eyed teacher explained that Mungo Park discovered the source of the Niger River in 1796. Unable to comprehend, the young child ponders over the fact that the source of the Niger River is just a stone throw away from his home, and yet his forefathers, who lived, fished and farmed on the edge of the river, could not “discover” it. Ashamed of his lineage, the African boy considers the Europeans heroic to have traveled thousands of miles to ‘discover’ a river just by the nose of his own people. He dreams of being like the Europeans, the great discoverers, and understandably looses any regard for his ‘ignorant’ people. The deep rotted inferiority complex leads him to dismiss whatever is African; cloth, food, culture, values, speech, technology and medicine as inadequate and in that same mind-set, he rears his children.
”

- Education in Africa: Whose Education, anyway? (via cosmicyoruba)

amberagron:

Her work looks at stereotypes, historical context and gender studies of Indigenous peoples of the Americas, specifically those of the First Nations. Claxton’s family are descendents of Sitting Bull’s followers who escaped prosecution by the U.S. Army in 1876 after the Battle of the Little Bighorn, heading to Canada.

Amber Berson: Aboriginal people are often photographic subjects – it has been more rare to find them behind the camera. As subjects, First Nations people are often represented in a stereotypical manner as archetypes and symbols, expressing a make believe past rather than a contemporary lifestyle, as opposed to being portrayed in more realistic manners. As a result, contemporary Aboriginal photographic practice is often a reaction to canonical images by the likes of Edward S. Curtis, which portray the “Noble Savage” and the “Indian Princess” amongst other constructed types. Whereas Curtis gave the viewer staged and romanticised images of a “dying race”, contemporary photographers try to show current experience and conditions of living: rejecting costume and staged tableaux in exchange for real people in real places.

As David Garneau writes, “Indigenous presence in the popular media is usually a cue to stories of crime, abuse, poverty, loss, fluff and feathers pride, or government sponsored success.”24 The alternative is often serious works that demonstrate the reality of “rez” life or the effects of colonialism on present life. Claxton’s work is unapologetically neither.

I will add though: I understand how problematic Curtis can be, and I often feel uncomfortable with how some of them are contextualized. I don’t hate him though. Like it or not, his photographs do serve as incredibly valuable documents, living proof of a marginalized people. The horrific thoroughness of the genocide on indigenous people threatened any acknowledgement of their existence at the time, and Curtis’ massive body of work does combat that attempt to silence indigenous history. In that way I think he’s rather important. On the other hand, some of his work (esp. his later photographs) really lay the “Noble Savage” perspective on thick, and it is pretty creepy.

just wanted to reblog to address some of this commentary:

Edward Curtis’ work was not ever an attempt to combat the silencing of indigenous histories. Quite the opposite, he required his subjects to wear cultural artifacts Curtis had either received from other tribes or fabricated himself, and was thus highly active in the genocide of American Indians (via theft and destruction of culture, not to mention his utter romanticization of Natives as fallen, defeated, and otherwise passive, ahistorical, colonized half-humans). The bulk of his work is literally false representation in every sense of the idea. Other indigenous bloggers have written about this as well.

Moreover, contrary to popular belief, the general public was very aware of the fact that Native peoples existed—rather than being erased from the discourse entirely, they were written of in popular media as savages, diggers, and other derogatory terms. Indeed, newspapers frequently celebrated massacres of Natives. I have a book of over 600 pages of citations of such newspaper articles in 19th century California alone. There was absolutely no threat of non-acknowledgement of Natives at that time. The very idea that the general public was unaware of Native peoples at this time is something that could only be produced by the colonial narrative that erases the very genocide OP claims Curtis embalmed.

Edward Curtis was complicit in all of that. His photos helped to further legitimize colonial rule for a large portion of the general public, and his work was only possible after centuries of mass-murder. The only living proof they provide is of the ongoing colonial genocide preserved in national discourse; Curtis’ body of work speaks to the national discourse on Natives at that time, and in that sense is a part of indigenous histories, but was nothing but a full-frontal attack on indigenous peoples. Indeed, “indigenous histories,” are available in a wealth of resources (oral histories, Native-written books and articles, colonial archives, etc), and thus Curtis hardly ‘saved’ indigenous histories from extinction.

Painting Edward Curtis as some kind of white savior is much too generous, because at the end of the day, all he was was a genocidal racist white dude with a camera and federal funding/protection.

Searching for Knowledge: marshmallowmegamama: Sarah Jones, Former Bengals Cheerleader, Wants...

Searching for Knowledge: marshmallowmegamama: Sarah Jones, Former Bengals Cheerleader, Wants...:
marshmallowmegamama:

maybe if you stopped the feminist movement from selling misandry, we’d all get along better

BUT MISANDRY IS A WAY OF LIFE FOR ME

I USE TEARS OF MRA’S TO MOISTURISE MY SKIN

TO SEASON MY FOOD

TO CONDITION MY HAIR

So My cousin just had a new born Baby...

hakkaiduo:

However, he was born with Trisomy 18, also known as Edwards Syndrome.

Pretty much, he has only one chamber in his heart, and is not expected to last too much longer.

My family set up this little fundraiser page here to help offset some medical bills and whatnot.

If anyone would be willing to donate a dollar or something, I would appreciate it. It’s a terrible thing to have to go through, loosing a new born.
